ChatGPT Business vs Plus: which one does a small business need?
Both plans cost about the same per person. The real difference is who owns the account, what happens to your data, and what happens when someone leaves. Here's how to choose, with prices checked October 16, 2026.
The short answer
If you work alone and only paste in public information, Plus is fine. If two or more people use ChatGPT for work, or anyone puts customer or company information into it, use Business.
The price per person is close. Plus is $20 a month. Business is $20 per user per month billed annually, or $25 billed monthly, with a two-seat minimum, so the smallest Business workspace costs $40 to $50 a month. What you get for that is an account the business owns instead of one each employee owns.
ChatGPT Team and ChatGPT Business are the same plan. OpenAI renamed Team to Business on August 29, 2025, without changing its features or price, so older articles comparing "Team vs Plus" still apply.
Quick decision checklist
Pick Plus if all of these are true:
- You're the only person who will use it for work.
- You never paste in customer names, financial records or anything confidential.
- You've turned off model training in your settings.
Pick Business if any of these are true:
- Two or more people use ChatGPT for work.
- Customer, employee or financial information goes into it.
- You need the work to stay with the company when someone leaves.
- You want single sign-on or to control who has access.
What's different
From OpenAI's pricing and help pages, checked October 16, 2026.
| ChatGPT Plus | ChatGPT Business | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it's for | One person. OpenAI describes Free, Go and Plus as plans for individuals. | Teams. A dedicated workspace for the business. |
| Price | $20 / month | $20 / user / month annual, $25 monthly |
| Minimum | One person | Two paid seats |
| Used for training? | May be, unless you turn it off in settings | Not by default |
| Who owns the account | The person who signed up | The business |
| Admin and sign-in | No admin controls. The user can turn on multi-factor authentication for their own account. | Admin controls, SAML single sign-on and multi-factor authentication |
| Sharing | Your own chats and projects | Shared projects and custom GPTs inside the workspace |
Business also offers a Premium seat at $100 per user per month annually ($125 monthly) with five times the usage of a standard seat. Most small businesses don't need it. Neither plan includes the API, which OpenAI bills separately.
The difference that matters most: who owns the account
A Plus account belongs to the person who opened it, even if the business pays for it. Their chats, uploaded files and saved instructions sit in their personal account. When that person leaves, the work leaves with them, and you can't see what company information went into it.
On Business, the workspace belongs to the company. You add and remove people, you control sign-in, and work done in the workspace stays with the business. That's also why Business is the safer place for customer information: you can require everyone to use it, and you know where the data is.
A setup we'd want to fix is a few employees each paying for Plus on a company card. It feels like a business account, but it isn't one.
Moving from Plus to Business
If someone already has a Plus account with useful work in it, OpenAI lets them merge their personal workspace into Business. A few things to know before they do:
- Merging is optional. They can keep the personal account separate and start fresh in Business.
- It copies all supported content at once. You can't pick individual chats, projects or files.
- The personal workspace is deactivated afterward, and there's no undo.
- Some older conversations may not come across, and projects owned by other people don't move.
For most small teams the cleanest approach is to start fresh in Business and keep personal accounts for personal use.
What it costs for a small team
Business is billed per seat, and you don't need a seat for everyone. Give one to each person who will use it most days.
| Team size | Billed annually | Billed monthly |
|---|---|---|
| 2 seats (the minimum) | $40 / month | $50 / month |
| 3 seats | $60 / month | $75 / month |
| 5 seats | $100 / month | $125 / month |
Standard seats at OpenAI's published prices, before tax.
The Claude, Copilot and Gemini versions
Anthropic's plans line up almost exactly. Claude Pro is the individual plan at $20 a month ($17 a month billed annually), and personal plans let you opt out of training. Claude Team is the business plan: $20 per standard seat per month billed annually or $25 monthly, for teams of 2 to 150, with no model training on your content by default and single sign-on included.
If your business already runs on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, check what you already pay for first. Copilot Chat and Gemini under your work account come with business data protections, and you may not need another subscription. We compare all four in Is ChatGPT safe for business?
Common questions
Is ChatGPT Team the same as ChatGPT Business?
Yes. OpenAI renamed Team to Business on August 29, 2025. Existing Team workspaces became Business workspaces with the same features and price.
Can I use ChatGPT Plus for my business?
For a one-person business that only works with public information, yes. Turn off model training in your settings. Once you have employees using it, or any customer data going in, Business is the better fit because the business owns the account.
Is ChatGPT Business worth it for two people?
It costs $40 to $50 a month for two seats, compared with $40 for two Plus accounts. For the same price billed annually, or $10 more billed monthly, you get a company-owned workspace, no training on your data by default, and control over who has access.
Does ChatGPT Business include the API?
No. API usage is billed separately from Business seats.
